This video talks about how the sphinx was cut out of the ground below the surface.
This is an odd manner of sculpture that we don't often see.
This would be the method that I would think many of the pyramidal forms we see in the Mars satellite videos would more likely have been produced - if they were made by intelligent intervention; carved down, and not built up.

And compare the better defined and perhaps, longer lasting "pyramid with a grid" that seems to be carved out of a cliffside to nearby mounds that seem to have been built up, as they are now in poor form, and seem to be weeping blocks:
