Very interesting link below. Doug Ellison has weighed in on the object with what he believes is a closer shot of it at sol 77. If he is correct, this may shed a lot of light on what we are seeing: ;D www.planetary.org:80/blog/article/00002369/

Well, I had hoped that Doug had identified a better picture of the gorilla-like object. Unfortunately, his analysis in making that identification falls short. Doug identified a rock which scientists call "Skull" from sol 77-78 as the most likely object we are seeing in the gorilla image in sol 87. Doug thinks the two objects are similar, and that is where his analysis seems to end. All rocks look alike - so one rock is as good as another, I suppose. The problem is there are too many discrepancies between the two rocks. For instance - there is no little gorilla - or a rock equivalent - beside skull. This is skull in the foreground: We see clearly that skull is on the left side of the rover tracks. Now take a look at our 'gorilla' objects. They appear to be on the right side of the tracks: The traverse map shows a straight shot between sol 75 and sol 87. So, what we see is what we get. Skull is on the left, and the gorilla objects are, in all probability, on the right. Of course, we're still missing a lot of nav and hazcam images - and possibly others between sol 77 and 87, so who knows? Maybe someday we'll get a closer look at the 'gorilla' objects. Unfortunately, at least for now, there is no evidence other than Doug's idle hunch that skull and gorilla may be the same object. And those objects don't even appear to be on the same side of the rover tracks. ;)

It also appears the gorilla object is smaller than the rock they call "skull."

Doug has now posted a youtube video regarding this anomaly. This is the same guy who kicks people off his message board for even breathing the possibility of any anomaly. He does not address why the rock he selected is on the opposite side of the rover tracks from the gorilla-like object. Until he can answer that, and other basic questions, I regard it as speculation and possibly even intentional disinformation. The patterns on the two objects and surrounding the two objects are simply not the same. Here is Doug's video: www.youtube.com/user/unmannedspaceflight

Okay, he makes a much better case in the video below.
He is saying the rock he selected is a different side of the same rock from which we see the gorilla, and he uses 3d software to model it.
Nicely done. :)
