That is fascinating to see that trail leading up to this rock.

Pollluks, I think what you have identified as a belt buckle, I am seeing as a structural element which holds this thing together. In plaster statue work for instance, metal rods and other metal pieces are used to hold the entire artistic piece together - like bones give structure to a body. I think we may be seeing a metal rod or strap (perhaps, now petrified) exposed in these things - which leads me to believe they have deteriorated since the time they were made. I am stumped as to their purpose -their age, or even the size of the person who would have made such things. Take a look at the rock close by to this one: Curiosity sol 66: mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl-raw-images/msss/00066/mcam/0066ML0296004000E1_DXXX.jpgIf you look closely - through some very strange sculpture of a pig - turtle - and chimp - all with mouths wide open, you can see some structural parts holding this bizarre thing together: Yellow shows the internal structure, now exposed (much like the thin strap element under the cobra head in the one you are detailing): Notice in particular the thin flat bar or bars that seem to run the length of the thing. (Now, what sort of ordinary unaltered rock needs flat bars running through it to give it structure?): The pig head, turtle-like head, and chimp head are marked below - arrows point at each mouth: Along the same pattern of many animal faces, I found this one - with similar mouth shaping, but no exposed structural elements that I see: Curiosity sol 3, image 97: mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl-raw-images/msss/00003/mcam/0003ML0000097000E1_DXXX.jpgA dog face to the left, more of a human face to the right - protruding out of the same rock: Note the tongue and teeth of the dog face - much like the turtle mouth above: In the one you are detailing, I saw the major face before that encompasses the whole rock, but I am just now seeing those profiles that you are showing in your image above. Wow. Seeing structural elements that go along with these faces really adds evidence that we didn't have previously that these were made and not just random natural formations that we just happen to see. What purpose could these have? Are they trash left over from a civilization? Were they yard ornaments? Houses? Is it surface art made by under-surface beings who have to escape the cosmic rays of the sun by day - but come out at night to do arts and crafts? This is truly bizarre. And I see no reason for NASA to hide any of it, as no one who sees it could possibly believe it, and still consider themselves sane. Most people who look at any of this will only see monotone rock jumbles, and not venture to break it down into components, anyway.

Totally agree that no reason for NASA to hide any of it. But after they spending billions of dollars on a "camera" they could share images of better quality. Anyway, because we have what we have, everyone will see only what they want to see. Here's another version of my point:

Great find. This is much better resolution for study!

I was so focused on that piece of projection coming from the formation that it took me a little while to see the goat head looking to the left, with tongue hanging out on the ground.
Another interpretation could be a dragon, particularly if you consider the shadow to be the fire coming out of its mouth.
If we consider this as sculpture, that odd projection coming out of the back of it would actually make sense - as something that would be needed to structurally hold the head onto a wall.

Unfortunately until I found a better picture and so I've let my imagination to draw some things.I'm not trying to prove that this is really a goat's head. Мaybe it would be just a rock. Вut so much fun when there are striking similarities :) The pictures of the real victims of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD in Pompeii, gives me a sense to think that it might be not a sculpture and it might be real an animal's head

We have several in this thread we should revisit when we get a chance. mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl-raw-images/msss/00066/mcam/0066ML0296004000E1_DXXX.jpgAs for the strap, part of the reason for the difference were the slightly different angles of the two pictures. But the main reason for the difference appears to be bad pixels. There is a vertical rectangular smear in the exact spot where we interpret that to be a straight flat area. This area contained enough pixels that we should have believed it to be sufficiently resolved. However, the bad pixels tricked us. Take a look: The brown rectangular strip is simply lacking in information that we expected to exist: The histogram of the strap shows us that the rectangular strip is lacking in the same spectrum of information that the rest of the image contains: In the rectangular strip, we have a narrow spectrum or range of information on those pixels: But we have a much greater range of information represented in the larger image - not including the rectangle: Whether this represents image tampering - or simply defective information from transmission - or from the camera when the photo was taken, I don't know. The watcher may take a look at this thread, and give us his take on it.

And to be fair, if we take a histogram of a small rectangular slice of the image near the brown rectangular smear, we still get a broad range of available information: At least this tells us that we can check local histograms to determine if we have enough information - or enough to believe we have the whole range of information that should accompany the image - to make a conclusion. Whether it was an honest image defect, or an intentionally-placed block, the brown rectangular smear was preventing us from receiving the true information that should have been available to us at this image resolution. Honestly, I don't see these rectangular blocks on images I take with my digital camera here on earth, but I'm sure their camera is different than mine (I would have thought better than mine, of course).

Does this look like an animal bone to anyone else?
